Tanzlabor_21 / Tanzbasis Frankfurt_Rhein_Main

Tanzlabor_21 was created in 2006 as part of a five-year funding program by Tanzplan Deutschland, an initiative of the Federal Cultural Foundation, by Dieter Buroch (Künstlerhaus Mousonturm), Prof. Heiner Goebbels (Institute for Applied Theater Studies at the Justus-Liebig-University- Giessen) and Prof. Dieter Heitkamp (Frankfurt University for Music and Performing Arts) and has since successfully worked on the implementation of its multiple and interrelated programs in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region.

After funding by Tanzplan Deutschland ended in 2010, Tanzlabor_21 has continued and even further diversified its activities thanks to the support of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain and an alliance of foundations [Aventis Foundation, BHF-Bank-Stiftung, Crespo Foundation, Dr. Marschner-Stiftung, Frankfurter Bürgerstiftung im Holzhausenschlößchen, Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft]. The City of Frankfurt and the Land Hessen have moreover also pledged to continue their financial support. In January 2012, Niels Ewerbeck - new artistic director of Künstlerhaus Mousonturm - joined the directing team of Tanzlabor_21.

The work of Tanzlabor_21 focuses mainly on cultural and aesthetic education, as well as dance training. If dance is to continue developing as a independent contemporary art form and to assume a more prominent role in public life, then practical knowledge of dance - its theories, history and relationships to other art forms (visual arts, music, performance) - must be made accessible early on both through projects with children and young people, as well as in professional dance training programmes.

All of Tanzlabor_21's activities share a common goal: to strengthen the basis for contemporary dance in the Frankfurt region by embedding dance firmly in the social fabric of the community and by demonstrating its enormous potential - potential that is just waiting to be tapped and harnessed. Its projects are aimed at dance professionals, dance students, and dance enthusiasts of all ages, from children and teenagers to adults. The concept focuses on building networks and promoting exchange on a practical level between project participants, dance makers, students, educators, communicators, and producers, as well as the general audience.

With its wide range of projects and activities, Tanzlabor_21 has contributed significantly to the development of a vibrant dance scene in Frankfurt and the surrounding region that is open to experimentation and discourse, as can be seen by the growing number of dancers, choreographers and performance artists working and teaching in the area. One example that attests to the dynamic, artistically exciting climate in the greater Frankfurt area is »ID_Frankfurt / Independent Dance«, an association of dance professionals that has attracted (inter)national attention with its multiple activities.

Although Tanzlabor_21 is not a production house, we nevertheless consider it important to work with dance professionals in Frankfurt and the surrounding area to improve working conditions and the local rehearsal space situation, as well as help increase the number of possibilities for local professionals to show their work.

Tanzlabor_21 / Tanzbasis Frankfurt_Rhein_Main - implemented by Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in cooperation with the Frankfurt University for Music and Performing Arts and the Institute for Applied Theater Studies at the University Giessen as part of the Hessian Theater Academy network.

Tanzlabor_21 / Tanzbasis Frankfurt_Rhein_Main - funded by the Department for Cultural Affairs of the City of Frankfurt am Main, Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, as well as the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain and the alliance of foundations.

The alliance of foundations is a voluntary association of foundations, who formed at the suggestion of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain in order to support the activities of Tanzlabor_21. The alliance consists of the Aventis Foundation, BHF-Bank-Stiftung, Crespo Foundation, Dr. Marschner-Stiftung, Frankfurter Bürgerstiftung im Holzhausenschlösschen and the Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft.
